A conscious decision

It’s because you made up your mind consciously. Your conscious mind wants to eat less, quit smoking etc. but you haven’t told your subconscious mind.

Your subconscious mind controls your automatic habits and urges. Here’s an example of how it works. Please read this next bit, as it’s REALLY important in helping you understand…

Your subconscious mind usually controls your breathing. But you can change this by focusing on your breathing consciously.

You may want to breath slower and deeper because you’ve read it’s better for your health. So you consciously change how you breathe.

This works fine for a few minutes, but after a while your breathing returns back to normal. This is because it eventually returns back to your subconscious control. And your subconscious doesn’t know that breathing slowly and deeply is better for your health. So it breathes like it’s always done.

The same happens with habits. Once you’ve consciously let go of making the change, you return to your old ways. Your subconscious takes over, and it doesn’t know any better. That’s why so many people fail to stick to their new year resolutions.

How do you make a permanent change?

Subconscious change

How To Stick To Your New Year ResolutionsYou need to find a way to change your subconscious thinking to change a habit permanently. Hypnotherapy is great at doing this quickly.

A hypnotic trance is a state of mind where your conscious mind is tuned down, allowing greater access to your subconscious. In hypnosis, suggestions are given directly to your subconscious mind. Once your subconscious mind is aware of the change you wish to make, this becomes permanent.

This isn’t the only way…

You CAN change your subconscious mind through shear tenacity, but it does take time. Research suggests it takes around 28 days.

You need to remain consciously aware of the change you’re making for 28 days. After this time, your subconscious should have the message.

So if you consciously breathe slowly and deeply for 28 days, your subconscious will start doing this without you having to think about it.

Reminders

To stay consciously aware and motivated to stick to your New Year Resolutions, you must not forget. If you do, you ‘ll quickly slip back to your old ways. The best way to do this is to give yourself lots of reminders.

If you’ve decided not to eat in between meals, then leave yourself messages EVERYWHERE to remind yourself. Get some post-it notes and stick them where you spend your time, saying things like “Only Meals”.

Stick these at your desk, on your fridge, on cupboards, and on your walls. This will remind you to consciously stick to your goal.

Let people close to you know your New Year Resolution. Give them permission to reprimand you if you show signs of slipping.

Remove easy opportunities to slip

Make it as difficult as possible to subconsciously slip up, by removing opportunities. Throw away snack foods if you don’t want to eat between meals. Throw out your cigarettes, and don’t let anyone leave them lying around if you want to quit smoking.

Don’t take money out with you if you think you may buy items you shouldn’t – or only take enough for what you need.

Be honest and transparent with yourself. Remember, cheating is only cheating yourself.

Be adamant

Be 100% committed to your New Year Resolutions. Don’t give yourself permission to break them “just this once” because you’ve had a bad day. You WILL have bad days, and they’re a great excuse to break your New Year Resolutions. Soldier on regardless.

Don’t use good days as an excuse either. “I’m celebrating” or “I just want to have fun” is no excuse. You CAN be happy without your bad habit. In fact you’ll be happier in the long run.

Replace it

Think of ways to replace what you’ve quit. That way your subconscious mind won’t rebel because it feels it’s missing out.

If you quit smoking, use the money you save for something pleasurable. If you quit eating between meals, reward yourself with new clothing that shows off your improved figure.

Find ways of making your subconscious mind feel better off due to the change. It has a limited understanding of the modern world, and feels cheated when you’ve eliminated something – even if it’s bad for you.

Your subconscious mind will nag you with urges until you relent. Don’t give it a reason to.

Final Thoughts On How To Stick To Your New Year Resolutions

It’s difficult to permanently change habits you’ve had for years. On a conscious level you’re likely to be motivated. But you must also find a way to engage your subconscious mind. Then you’re not “caught in two minds”. Both your conscious and your subconscious need to be working together. If they are, you can achieve anything.

You can go the quick route and use hypnotherapy as a tool to help. Or you can exercise your tenacity and change your subconscious thinking with shear bloody mindedness. Either way, once you’ve decided your New Year Resolution, move heaven and earth to make it happen.

There must be a benefit that you will experience from your New Year Resolution. Perhaps more money or better health. Focus on this benefit when times get tough. Commit to 28 days. After this time, things get a LOT easier.

Good luck, and have a great new year!

Jon

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”
Marcus Aurelius
We are all human, and we are all subject to experiencing a broad array of emotions. We experience emotions on both ends of the spectrum. What defines which end will carry more weight?
The one we feed the most. The stoics, Buddhists, and other sages truly understood/understand the process of the mind, and how our thoughts control our brain chemistry, and ultimately, our happiness. Many people simply drift through life, experiencing neither extreme, but retain a rather indifferent, or “comfortable” attitude.Others slip into a deep, depressed state, or a state of being overcome with anger, rage and resentment.Others, however, achieve the ultimate state of consciousness and awareness. The Buddhists call this state “Enlightenment”. It is the ending of all suffering.

When we understand the true cause of happiness, and learn to differentiate the cause of happiness from things that bring us joy, only then can we achieve the state of higher being.

I like to practice gratefulness. I pay great thanks every day that I wake up to see another day. I pay great thanks for the wonders that life brings; to all the acts of kindness that I encounter.

While it’s normal to experience sudden negative emotions such as anger or sorrow, I understand that it’s of utmost importance to choose to respond wisely, rather than to react in the moment and create a ripple effect of continued negativity, which inevitably sits in the back of our subconscious and leads to a poor state of mind.

When we choose to change our perspective on external circumstances, we then can understand the finer side of life.

How Is A Phobia Created – Why Do We Get Phobias?

How Is A Phobia Created – Why Do We Get Phobias?

Find the answer to how is a phobia created…

Why do we get phobias?

Developing a phobia is natural within us all. It’s there to protect you, but sometimes things go wrong.

If you learn how a phobia is created, you’re better placed to deal with it. Here’s one way a phobia is typically formed…

Example

Say you grew up in a remote rural area. Indigenous to this area is a small red beetle. It is so poisonous that one bite has you convulsing on the floor, dying in seconds.

As a two year old, you’ve never seen or heard of them yet. One day you’re walking with your mother through the forest. Your mother looks away for a moment and you spot one sat on a brown leaf. Curious, you walk over and attempt to pick it up.

Your mother turns round and freaks out. Panicking and screaming, she grabs you and runs you back home. You’ve never seen your mum, who is your source of strength and protection, so frightened before. Her reaction scared you more than anything before in your life. This thing must be REALLY dangerous.

For your own protection, you have now developed a healthy fear for these beetles. Whenever you see one, your mind automatically kicks into flight or fight mode and you run away from them, trembling with fear. There is no way you will ever approach one again, and no bad thing.

Why do we get phobias?
Fear Can Be Contagious!

Here’s the twist…

What if this beetle was not really poisonous? What if, in the past, your grandfather died of a heart attack, at the same time as he touched one? Your grandmother wrongly believed that this was the cause. Whenever she saw one, she freaked out. Of course your Mum saw this on several occasions. Your mother naturally believed her Mum to be right, gained her mother’s fear, and passed it to you.

This is probably why so many people are frightened of spiders. It is passed from person to person. There are other ways you can acquire a phobia, which I’ll discuss in a few moments. But first, what is a phobia?

What is a phobia?

A phobia is defined as an irrational fear of something. There is nothing wrong with being frightened of something that can easily kill you. In fact it is very smart. If the beetle was highly poisonous, then you would be wise to avoid it at all costs.

However if it wasn’t poisonous, and you spent your life avoiding these creatures, then it could be said that it was an irrational fear.

This might not be much of a problem, but suppose it hampered you from hunting or gathering food. Then your life would be better with some help to remove this fear.

Other ways to get a phobia

Of course this isn’t the only way you can acquire a phobia. A dog might have barked at you loudly when a child, severely frightening you. After this one instance, you may have avoided dogs. The more you avoid them over the years, the more you reaffirm your fear. You deny yourself positive experiences with dogs, so you only have that one negative experience to draw from.

You might approach someone in your tender years and ask them on a date. They turn you down. This leaves you feeling rejected and humiliated. You avoid asking anyone else, and end up having difficulty asking anyone again.

TV also encourages your fears. CLICK HERE to read how.

No fear

Did you know we are all born without fears or phobias? They are acquired through your life. As three month old baby you will happily grab a rattlesnake. A three month old baby will let a spider run up its arm.

Most fears and phobias were created when we were very young. Often you won’t remember the time your fear was created – at least not consciously.

Your subconscious mind has a very long memory – for your protection. When a fear or phobia has been installed, it will automatically trigger your fear responses. When your life is in danger, a split second can be the difference between life and death. There is no time to think about it consciously. Your subconscious takes over, and quickly triggers fear.

Caught in two minds…

Suppose the rural area you live in starts getting developed. New people move into the area, with new ways of thinking and doing things. They tell you that the red beetle is not poisonous. To illustrate this, they pick one up and everything is fine.

These new people have no fear of these beetles, and nothing bad ever happens to them. You know they must be right.

You decide to confront your fear and pick one up.

As you approach the small red beetle, your heart starts to beat rapidly. You lift your hand and it starts shaking uncontrollably. You start to sweat and feel sick. You can’t do it.

Why can’t you pick it up, even though you know it is safe?

It’s because your subconscious mind is triggering your fear response. Your conscious mind knows it is safe, but that doesn’t matter. Your subconscious mind doesn’t. You’re literally caught in two minds, but it’s your subconscious mind that prevails.

It usually doesn’t matter what people say to you. They may talk total sense about your phobia, and you may agree with them. However they are appealing to your conscious mind. This isn’t the part of your mind that is triggering your fear response.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is very effective for treating phobias. This is because your conscious mind is tuned down. This allows for better communication with your subconscious mind.

A hypnotherapist can get to the root of your problem, and rapidly change your subconscious thinking. This leads to an almost immediate eradication of your phobia.

Final thoughts

Now you the answer to the question “How is a phobia created?” is a natural process that is designed to protect you. If it has no negative impact on your life, then it’s not so bad. However if your phobia stops you progressing in life, then you deserve help.

Fears can hamper your life in many ways. Fears can stop you finding love. They can stop you getting the job you really want. They can stop you making friends, speaking in public, even stop you seeking dental help. They are no laughing matter, and you deserve to find a solution.

Are We Hypnotised Every Day?

Are We Hypnotised Every Day?

Are We Hypnotised Every Day?Are We Hypnotised Every Day? …

It’s a scary thought, but most of us are being hypnotised every day – without knowing it. As a hypnotherapist for many years, I know this is true. Let me explain…

Who is hypnotising us?

Primarily it is TV that is hypnotising us. Here’s how it works…

We all slip into a hypnotic trance several times a day. It’s a natural state of mind, like daydreaming. When in this state of mind, we become more suggestible.

We naturally slip into this daydream hypnotic state when engrossed in TV – and advertisers know this.

Advertisers

Advertisers Often Tell You That You’re Not Enough – Without Their Product!

Advertisers bombard you with their messages over several hours every day – AND THEY DO EFFECT YOU. Why else would they pay so many millions for this opportunity?

The problem is that to make you need their products, they often employ tactics to make you feel inadequate, fearful, and insecure. This is negative hypnosis.

Does it work? You bet. Be honest – how would you feel publicly using a cell phone that is 10 years old? You would probably feel embarrassed. Why is that?

It’s because the phone industry has created a culture that you MUST have the latest phone. This is great for business as they can cajole you into buying a new phone every 2 years. They would get 5 times less sales if they sold you a new phone only when you needed one.

OK this is relatively harmless – it just means you spend more money than you need to, and you’re paranoid about your phone once it’s a year old. But it gets worse…

You’re fat and smelly – want some chocolate?!

One Advert Might Tell You To Buy Some Chocolate. The Next Tells You You’re Overweight!

Adverts often tell you that you smell, you’re fat, you have bad breath, bad teeth, oh and you need to eat more chocolate. They get into your head, tell you you’re deficient, and the solution is to buy their products.

Weight loss adverts tell you you’re fat; deodorant adverts say you smell; mouth wash adverts say you have bad breath; and food manufacturers say you need to eat more. Confusing or what?!

Adverts aim to de-power you. A weak and vulnerable person is better prey to salesmen. This is probably the biggest reason why so many people need hypnotherapy – to counteract all the negative hypnosis that adverts bombard them with.

Advertisers DON’T care about your welfare. Here’s just one example that infuriates me…

Sunny D have convinced many parents to buy their children their product instead of natural fresh orange juice. Sunny D only contains about 2% concentrated fruit juice. This is bulked up with sugar, water and chemicals. Not good. They’ve had to do a LOT of brainwashing to convince people to buy this vastly inferior product. And poor children are drinking this cheap rubbish, which costs around the same as the real deal, thinking it’s good for them. Is that fair?

Many of us are manipulated into buying inferior products, or products we don’t need. YOU need to fight back.

What can I do about it?

Reduce Your TV Viewing, Or At Least Turn Down The Adverts.

The average person watches around 4 hours of TV per day. If you’re awake for 16 hours per day, that’s around one quarter of your waking life exposing yourself to this influence. An obvious solution is to reduce your TV viewing.

Failing that, you can get into the habit of turning the volume off during the advertisement breaks.

If you do watch adverts, engage your brain. Get into a critical mindset and watch how they’re trying to manipulate you. It can be fun watching how they try and tell you how you need their rubbish.

This is probably the best solution. Even if you avoid TV, adverts are creeping more onto the internet, and are on radio, billboards, magazines and newspapers.

Use positive hypnotherapy to counteract these negative influences. A hypnotherapist can help raise your confidence, self esteem, positive thinking, and much more. You can be left feeling good about yourself once more.

Final thoughts

Are We Hypnotised Every Day? It would seem so.

Approach all adverts with a cynical mind, and don’t let them fool you. They are relying on you not bothering to think, so they slip silently into your subconscious. By stealth they can influence your thoughts and decisions without you knowing it. They can also drag you down, making you feel worthless and inferior.

Engage your brain and get into the habit of questioning everything. Also question your daily habits. Should you really be spending so much time with the TV on?

When buying anything, ask yourself if you really need it, and if you do, are there cheaper and/or better alternatives. Just because a product pays to be on TV and has a cute mascot, doesn’t necessarily mean it is a superior product.

If you accept that adverts can influence how you think, you can begin to fight back. Only then can you be free to live your life on your own terms and realise your true potential.
